Will Buckingham

Ideas matter…

I’m Will Buckingham. I’m interested in stories and ideas—how they can change our perceptions, and how they can change the world.

About me…

I write, teach, and run projects exploring writing and creativity. Originally from the UK, I’m currently based in Bulgaria. I am co-director of Wind&Bones, a community interest company exploring the intersections of writing, creativity and social justice. I have a PhD in philosophy and an MA in anthropology, and have worked on writing projects with a wide range of organisations including the British Council, Greenpeace, and the NHS. Until 2016, I was associate professor / reader in Writing and Creativity at De Montfort University, and since 2003, I’ve taught in universities in the UK, Myanmar, Taiwan, China, France, Bulgaria and elsewhere.

My writing…

I write fiction, non-fiction and for children. My most recent books include the travelogue Stealing With the Eyes (Haus Publications 2018) the middle-grade novel Lucy and the Rocket Dog (Knopf 2017), and the philosophy book, A Practical Guide to Happiness: Think Deeply and Flourish (Icon Books, 2012/2018). I’m currently writing a book for Granta called Hello Stranger: Stories of Connection in a Divided World, due out in 2021.

I’ve also written for BBC travel, Aeon Magazine, and many other places, and have had stories broadcast on BBC radio and elsehwere. I’m represented by Emma Finn at C+W agency in London.

“We tell ourselves stories in order to live…”
