I’m very pleased to see the cover of the new collection on cultivation in early China and Ancient Greece, to be published later this year by Bloomsbury and edited by Hyun Jin Kim, Karyn Lai and Rick Benitez. I have an article in the book on Liu Xie 劉勰, the cultivation of vitality (yang qi 養氣) and the arts of writing.
It is about how writing, rather than sapping our energy and making everybody generally pretty miserable, can be a way of feeding one’s vital spirits. Amongst other things, the chapter has some entertaining passages from Liu on the flaws of writers.
I’ll post again when the book comes out later this year, but for the time being, you can just admire the very handsome cover.
